this is how you replace a silo

Dutch growers invest in better water quality

Now things are improving in the Dutch horticulture sector, A1 Tuinbouwtechniek noticed that also the investments in water quality are increasing. "For example by using tarpaulins to cover water silos," says Ron Duijvestijn.

Replacing a silo - how do you do that? In a video A1 Tuinbouwtechniek demonstrates how the old silo is folded up step by step, and the new silo is built up again. The company from 's-Gravenzande is active in screen, ventilation and water technology and within the latter category the replacement of silos is an important subject. "Always was, but since things are going better in horticulture, you do notice that there is more activity," says Ron Duijvestijn. "And you find that growers are willing to invest more for a better water quality."

There is a significant mud layer in the old silo

Folding up is child’s play

Protect your water
This is reflected for example in the choice for DelafleX, a fully UV-resistant silo liner with a 15 year warranty and a very high resistance to fertilizers and for example chlorine, or a DelafloaT floating cover. By screening the silo with this particular cover, algae growth is prevented. The tarpaulin is white in color to reflect sunlight (and heat) and, thanks to a special stud structure is as it were glued to the water. "Otherwise bacteria and fungi will accumulate in the sludge that forms at the bottom," Ron says. "That is what you want to avoid as much as possible." Growers can also opt to cover the entire silo. "With that you avoid all outside influences. That's what for instance seed companies prefer. Or we install a roof because the co-generator is placed next to the silo and one wants to avoid condensation leakage."

Silo is ready! Tarpaulin to cover it, that’s all.

Maintenance and inspections
But by just building a silo, covering it with a tarp and to remove it in time, is not all there is to it. Maintenance is also a service that A1 Tuinbouwtechniek can provide. "Of course, we monitor the quality of the silos of our customers properly. With regular inspection you almost always prevent problems," Ron states. "We also take care of the cleaning of the silo, if customers require so. By having the silo cleaned annually or by periodically replacing the tarpaulin, you improve the quality of your water."
