These are the main conclusions from a research report commissioned by the EU, which can be read here. Some other remarkable conclusions: despite all the efforts for sustainability, the European energy consumption rose by 0.7% compared to 2016. Despite measures for CO2-emission reduction, it remained the same in the energy sector and, with all emissions sources included, it even increased. It is the commitment of France, the UK, the Netherlands, Italy and Portugal to phase out coal while Eastern European countries will stick to coal.
