Recently, Brandkamp took over their neighboring company, a breeder and propagator of hydrangeas. It is a 2 ha company with 4,000 square meter under glass and – more importantly – it has its own distinctive assortment of hydrangeas. “For us, it is about the mother plants, the varieties. Martin Wilkes built up a strong assortment with own genetics and several varieties that are doing very well in the market”, says CEO Hubert Brandkamp of Brandkamp.

For many years, Brandkamp has been a household name in the breeding of chrysanthemums and bedding plants, with several propagation locations in Kenya and Uganda. With the takeover of Wilkes Jungpflanzen Kulturen, the nursery of grower Martin Wilkes, they’re expanding their portfolio with hydrangeas.

In Anholt, Germany, Brandkamp employs 60 people. Also at this location, they have a lab where new varieties are bred. In combination with the well-known varieties from Wilkes, like Red Angel, Brandkamp believes it can take large steps in the Hydrangea market in the short term.

The propagation of hydrangea plants will remain in Germany, because the cold is beneficial for the plants during a part of the cultivation process. The Wilkes nursery is literally based opposite the facilities of Brandkamp in Anholt.

At the IPM Essen that took place last month, Hubert told us that 75 percent of the cuttings for the coming season are already sold. The season already started and the first plants are at the grower.
