Erik Wassenaar, FloraHolland:

"Europe: "Pink roses are popular this Mother's Day"

"Roses are very much in demand this Mother's Day and especially the pink colors", says Erik Wassenaar, auctioneer at FloraHolland Aalsmeer, The Netherlands. "But also for the other flowers we see a similar trend" he continues.

This Sunday, Mother's day will be celebrated in many countries. In Europe, this day is one of the most important days in the ornamental sector. Next to roses, the summer flowers and peonies are doing very well.

Also the mixed bouquets are popular. "Every year, they gain in popularity." Wassenaar is also satisfied with the prices. "The purchasing power of the consumers increases and this is clearly visible around Mother's Day" he says.

Also the prospects of VGB towards Mother's Day are positive. After this weekend, the results can be evaluated, but according to the wholesalers, the mood within the trade is already good.

According to Koen Heyl of the Dutch export company W.K. Heyl jr., who are specialized on the German market, pink is the most demanded colour this year. "And blue" adds Jaco de Mooij, director at wholesale Goedebuure & de Mooij. He also explains that the preference of the consumers, for exclusive flowers and plants, has increased. "Our customers have gone through a difficult period, but regarding the prices it is all a bit easier", he says. According to Bob Pieksma of HortiFlower, who are specialized on the supermarket, this does not only count for the Netherlands and Germany, but also for Switzerland.

Dutch companies who supply retailers in the countries where Mother's Day will be celebrated this Sunday, recognize stability in the flower prices. After Mother's Day this Sunday in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and Austria, Mother's Day in Poland and France is coming up. On 26 May, Poland will celebrate Mothers day and France will celebrate on 31 May.
