US: `Regulations threaten Connecticut greenhouse industry`

Ten members of the Connecticut's greenhouse industry met with U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., to discuss their concerns about the industry’s future.

Greenhouse growers represent a $250 million-a-year business in Connecticut, outpacing their rivals in the other five New England states, said Sam Smith, general manager of Grow Direct Farms in Somers.

Joe Geremia, owner of Geremia Greenhouses in Wallingford, puts it another way.

“Greenhouses are to Connecticut what cows are to Vermont,” Geremia said, emphasizing the industry’s importance to the Nutmeg State’s economy.
