UK: Rare spectacle as 'Century Plant' blooms at Ramsgate greenhouse

A GIANT plant at a glasshouse in Ramsgate has produced a truly once-in-a-lifetime event after it burst into flower.

An American agave at the Italianate Greenhouse, in King George VI Memorial Park, is in bloom for the first and only time in its life.

Specimens can grow for between 80 and 100 years before flowering and dying shortly afterwards. For this reason, the species is commonly known as the century plant.

A stalk, which now rises more than 30 feet in the air, began sprouting around six weeks ago as the plant prepared to bloom.
