Indian district to cultivate Dutch roses

In a fresh move by the government, the horticulture department of Ganjam will be starting protected cultivation of Dutch roses in the coming winter.

The production of Dutch Roses will be done under a central Government scheme, Mission on Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) and the farmers will be provided 70 per cent subsidy for making a protected house and buying seeds and fertilizers.

The Dutch roses are planted in a protected house with a mosquito net and plastic coverings. The Deputy Director of Horticulture (DDH) Bhagban Dash informs, “The climate can be regulated through this protected cultivation and required light can filter in, thereby stabilizing the temperature. Another good thing is that the sun’s harmful ultra violet rays would not affect the cultivation. The protected environment will keep insects and cattle at bay and thus increasing the production.”

For the greenhouse, the farmers who will cultivate Dutch roses will get Rs 935 per square meter on the basis of 50 per cent subsidy from the Central Government and a 20 per cent additional subsidy from the state government. The provision of bank loan is also available for the farmers.
