Hayling Island Horticultural Society:

UK: Highest number of entries for 10 years

Jan Mitchell, from Hayling Island Horticultural Society, describes how the annual show went.

Hayling Island Horticultural Society members held the third and final show of 2015 on September 5 at the Hayling Island Community Centre.

How on earth were we going to fit it all in? John Lark, chief steward, worked wonders with the highest number of entries for 10 years and somehow fitted a quart into a pint pot.

Exhibitors were at the hall by 7am, some having started their staging the previous evening.

Considering the August bank holiday deluge, the show of prize dahlias was superb, the best the judge, Ivor Eldred, had seen this year in Hampshire.

The Dahlia Championship silver medal was won by Allan Chivers who also won the medal for most points in the Open Vegetable classes.

Peter Rogers won the Banksian Medal for his impressive success in all vegetable, fruit and flowers classes. Peter’s giant leeks could be seen from anywhere in the hall and were a source of amazement.

The Floral Art was stunning. We are indebted to Liza Bailey, of Seaside Florist, who stepped into the breach at a moment’s notice to judge the large entry.
