AU: Tesselaar Tulip Festival springs to life with almost one million tulips

This year’s Tesselaar Tulip Festival will have more tulips than previous shows. Farm manager Laurie Hampton has planted more than 100,000 extra bulbs, bringing the grand total to almost a million across 120 varieties.

“We’ve got a new little plot of bulbs, and we’ll try to plant even more next year as well, because it gives a nice visual display,” Laurie said.

“Unfortunately, we’ve had a bit of a cold winter — with sunlight hours down from five hours to about three — and everything is a little bit late in flowering. Recent warm weather has kicked things on nicely, but there are still a few buds hanging on in there waiting for a bit of sunshine.”

Laurie is trialling several varieties, including an early flowering pink tulip called apricot impression. Other trial varieties include late-flowering varieties avignon parrot (orange), beaunes de denise (red) and Cuban night (deep purple).

The mail-order bulb business trials about 20 varieties of tulip from Europe each year to test them for suitability in harsh Australian conditions.

The Tesselaar Tulip festival at Silvan runs until October 6.
