Alstroemeria is the flower that radiates friendship and commitment. It is also a flower that shows a surprising development between purchase and final bloom, and is very easy to manage. That is why the alstroemeria is on the Flower Agenda from week 40 through 42 of 2015.
Symbolism
The alstroemeria, or Inca Lily, is a flower to give to your closest loved ones. This flower symbolises friendship and commitment. The six petals of the alstroemeria represent:
- Understanding
- Humour
- Patience
- Compassion
- Resoluteness
- Respect
These are important ingredients for a good marriage or long-lasting friendship.
Origin
The alstroemeria derives from the cool mountainous regions of the Andes in Bolivia , Peru and Chili. However, its habitat ranges from the deserts along the Pacific Ocean to deep inside the tropical rainforests of Brazil. That is why it is also known as the Inca or Peruvian Lily.
The Incas are thought to have spread the alstroemeria, hence the name.
The flower's Latin name refers to the botanist who discovered it, the Swede Cas Alstroemer. Linnaeus named one of the prettiest flowers after him, in gratitude for all his hard work.
Use
The alstroemeria has a striking form. The elongated leaves twist as they run along the tall stem. At the end of the stem the plant produces multiple flower stems, with flowers with wonderfully vivid colours and interesting patterns.
Many consumers are pleasantly surprised by the special touch that this sensational flower adds to all sorts of bouquets and occasions. After purchase, the shimmering flower buds soon burst into profuse bloom to create a vibrant vase of flowers.
