India: MSU’s botany dept makes rare discovery of orchid in Dang

With time, it will be rare to glimpse cultivation of orchid varieties in India as they are becoming an endangered species. However, there is some hope as researchers of the M S University's Department of Botany have spotted an orchid variety in the forests of Dangs.

The finding is rare as it is for the first time that an orchid has been spotted not only in the state but in the entire Western Ghats. Mital Bhatt, a researcher from the department found a variety of orchid named 'Geodorum Laxiflorum' in Dangs. In India, orchids are generally found in north east regions and in some pockets of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand.

'Geodorum Laxiflorum' is a terrestrial herb that is in a state of extinction due to human induced activities like industrialization, mining and other development projects.

"In 2014, a study was undertaken in Gujarat to trace Geodorum Laxiflorum'. At that point, the collected specimen was scientifically misidentified. The study undertaken by Bhatt has confirmed the identity of the terrestrial herb," said Bhatt's research guide, assistant professor Padamanabhi Nagar.

Nagar said, "We are still in the process of exploration. Yet during the study, we got to know that its tubes are edible. Orchid flowers also have high ornamental value with its fragrance and beauty." This terrestrial herb is also useful as a remedy for malignant tumours, stomach ache and joint pains.

"Orchids are found in regions with moist climate in deciduous forests. They are also monsoon floral. The flowering of orchids is generally in June-July and the fruiting happens between August and October. This herb grows on black clay soil and under shades of trees," said Bhatt.
