US (NY): Chrysanthemums blaze brightly at Sokolowski place

Autumn fireworks have begun at the Sokolowski place in Clifton Park. All 900 pieces are ground displays — deep purples and reds, bright yellows and whites, vivid bronzes and rusts.

Most are chrysanthemums, mums for short. Bernard and Greg Sokolowski have filled the entire front of their greenhouse business on Grooms Road with the classic fall flowers.

I drove by the place a few weeks ago and was so impressed with the explosion of purples, reds and yellows that I turned around and pulled into the front lot for a visit. Many greenhouse and farm market businesses sell mums this time of year, but I’d never seen such a massive array and assortment.
It was like wading through a psychedelic, Technicolor swimming pool. “Just hues!” as automobile dealer and showman Billy Fuccillo might have said, sort of.

I’m really a marigold guy. They’re the perfect flower for informal gardeners — like me — because the orange-red and yellow blooms keep coming through October. Spent buds can be harvested for next spring, so I never buy seeds.

Chrysanthemums have also made appearances on my property. Like marigolds, they don’t require constant care. They just go into the ground, expect a little water once in a while and show off their skills.
