Kenya: A day at the Kenyan Ravine Roses farm

Preferred Supplier - Ravine Roses is part of Karen Roses Limited Group, a company established in 1989 by the Kotut family. Today, Ravine Roses is made up of five farms: Kapkolia, Chepsito, Kaptumpo, Simotwo, and Torongo. The enterprise produces over 40 varieties of roses in 85 greenhouses covering more than 60 hectares of land.

Ravine Roses is located in the Rift Valley Province, approximately 220km north-west of Nairobi. Located just a few miles north of the equator and roughly 2100m above sea level, which makes it a nearly ideal location and ecological environment for the cultivation of high quality roses. These farms employ more than 1.200 full-time workers, making Ravine Roses the biggest employer in the region. General Manager Peter Kamuren says that because of their role in the economy, the region has now got more services available. “It helps us get better schools, sport facilities, health clinics, and more, bringing immediate improvement to our lives.”

Fairtade
Ravine Roses is Fairtrade certified in 2005. Because 40% of the total annual production is Fairtrade, investments can be made in various social projects . These ‘Fairtrade Premium Projects’ are carried out on education, public health, society and environment.” One of the projects is building a kindergarten for about 50 children, 3 classrooms made for preschoolers in 2 schools of the neighborhood, with also building a kitchen and store in the orphanage Eldama Ravine.” A responsible production of roses with also a contribution to society at the same time!
