In Singapore's Jubilee year, interest in orchids is blooming

They come in various shapes, sizes and colours, and with names like Aranthera Anne Black, Arachnis Maggie Oei and Grammatophyllum speciosum. And thanks to the SG50 celebrations, interest in orchids has been rekindled in Singapore.

"The interest of orchids in Singapore has always been there since the 1920s. That’s when it all began," said Mr Simon Tan, Assistant Director of the National Orchid Garden. "It's like fashion. It comes and goes ... but I guess the hobbyists, the people that are passionate and growing orchids in their backyard, corridor, and their gardens, they are always there."

Toh Garden, a nursery, says it sells an average of 10,000 potted orchids every month, a 20 to 30 per cent increase over last year.
