"Plant name should attract attention"

No question about it, a plant variety name should attract attention. The name should be short and easy to remember. A clever plant name likely will become a leader in plant sales. The shorter the name, the easier to remember. A one-word name is ideal.

Rose names
The most popular, top-selling rose today also has a one-word name. It is Knockout. Since the introduction of Knockout Red shrub rose in 1999 there have been several other roses added to the Knockout family.

William Radler is the breeder of Knockout roses. He lives in Wisconsin and continues to be an active rose breeder. Knockout is another example of a successful one-word name. The name indicates something very special in the shrub rose series. They do not require winter protection, have strong disease resistance and are easy to prune.

Roses often are named for famous people, events and of course for flower quality such as color and fragrance.
