India: Demand for lotus among other flowers rises
The national flower hardly sells throughout the year, but this time of the season, the demand for the lotus rises as it is considered auspicious on Deepawali. Residents were seen purchasing the flowers in the morning. “It is said that Lakshmi, the goddess of money, rides on lotus. So during the worship of the goddess, lotus is offered for prayers and is especially used as a ritual and the worshipping,” said Aarti Trivedi, a resident of Nanakheda.
The sale was available at various places in the city, including near Shahid Park, Har Ful ki gully in Freeganj, Malipura and various florists said that all their stock of flowers was sold before evening. The flowers that are generally available between Rs 5 to Rs 10 during the rest of the year, were selling for Rs 40 and above due to the festival season. Imported lotus flowers were also available in the city. These were available for Rs 100 and above. Some residents buy the flowers not only for worship, but also for decorative purposes on the festive occasion.
