US (CT): An abundance of poinsettias to pick from at Pequot Plant Farm

The riot of color in the greenhouses at Pequot Plant Farm didn't just happen on its own.

In July, workers at the Wheeler Road nursery planted more than 5,000 cuttings in anticipation of showy poinsettia plants come December.

Five of the farm's 11 greenhouses are now filled with thousands of red, pink, white and bi-color poinsettias — more than 30 varieties including seven or eight different reds — all clamoring to dress up a home or business for the holidays.

"We start at the end of July and they come to full bloom about Thanksgiving," said Dan Jeffrey, who runs the plant farm with his son-in-law, Joe Hutchison.
