Embossed label has potential to protect trademark

With more than thirty licensed growers, it is of high importance for Meilland Nederland that their growers- and license rights are well protected. The company wants to add a trademark to the plants in a easy, effective and not too expensive manner. Together with VanDerEng they developed an effective tool: an embossing.

Meilland Nederland is the daughter company of Meilland International, specialist in the breeding of new cut and outdoor rose varieties. Increasingly more international growers want to grow one or more Meilland-varieties. Therefore, the number of licensed growers of outdoor roses has grown to more than thirty. For Meilland, it is highly important that growers- and license rights are adequately protected. For this reason, the outdoor roses should be sold with a licensed label; a trademark.

Embossing
But on what kind of label is this possible? The fundamental idea is to do this in a easy and effective manner with low cost. Therefore they developed an embossing which will be punched into the label. Regarding shape, it can be anything. Most of the time it is a symbol (similar to the character of the master goldsmith), but it can also be a logo or a name.

"Usually, one does not see the embossing. However, one can feel it and when you go over it with a marker, the symbol, logo or name will become visible," says Ernst de Haas of VanDerEng. The company has extensive experience in the application of the security features. The embossing is placed in a position such that the printing surface of the label will not be decreased.
