India: Orchids named after leaders at Sikkim’s flower show

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently sounded the poll bugle in the north-east states of Assam and Sikkim. But when he was not busy making campaign speeches, he managed to make time for a flower show in Gangtok and unveiled three new Orchid varieties developed in Sikkim. But the Prime Minister's choice of names for the orchids is the interesting part – while he named one Cymbidium Sardar, the other one was christened Lycaste Deendayal.



The orchids were named after iconic leaders Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Jan Sangh leader Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay.
