Colombia: 500 million flowers to be exported for Valentine's Day

Colombia, the world's no. 2 producer of flowers after the Netherlands, is set to supply the world with 500 million stems for Valentine's Day, the Colombian Association of Flower Exporters said.

"We estimate that Colombia will export roughly 500 million flowers, mainly to the United States, to meet demand during this season that accounts for roughly 12 percent of annual sales for the sector," association president Augusto Solano Mejia said.

The holiday also creates some 18,000 temporary jobs in the Colombian flower industry, which employs more than 130,000 people year-round, he said.
