Alexander Könnecke, Weber Verpackungen:

New player in ornamental packaging flourishes with clever sleeve

Weber Verpackungen just entered the packaging industry of ornamental products and it has not gone unnoticed. With the introduction of their new paper-film sleeve, the bloom guard plus, they have attracted a lot of attention and even won the German Packaging award in September 2015. "The bloom guard plus is not only decorative and user friendly, it also protects the plant and is more environmentally friendly compared to the regular plastic sleeves," says Alexander Könnecke of Weber Verpackungen.

bloom guard plus
The bloom guard plus is Weber's latest innovation. "This sleeve protects and at the same time displays the flowers or herbs. The pull tab simplifies the removal of the plant from the top without needing to grasp the flowers, as is the case with conventional plant packaging," explains Könnecke. Besides the fact that it is very user friendly, the bloom guard plus is also environmentally friendly. "It can be made of 100% paper or from a thinner film, using materials economically and making the sleeve more environmentally friendly. On top of that, inner and outer printing is also possible and thanks to the punched holes, it allows good air circulation and thus a reduced susceptibility to mould." In September 2015, Weber Verpackungen won the German Packaging award with this bloom guard plus.

Assortment
The bloom guard plus is part of an assortment, which consists of 5 products in total. Next to the bloom guard plus, there is also a pot cover, a lock bag for herbs, bloom guard square (50/50 paper film or 100% paper) and the bloom guard classic. The latter sleeve comes with perforated holes for good air circulation and breathing activity of the plant or herb and has perforations for quick and clean tearing off with the packaging process. "Both, the bloom guard plus and the classic are suitable for machine-based packaging systems and thanks to their high quality, the sleeves are more constant during the packaging process than comparable sleeves from Asia."

Fully automated machine
Weber Verpackungen is quite well known in the food industry and entered the floriculture industry in 2015. At the end of 2013, they started to think about their production process as they had to re-build one of their packaging machines. They decided to start producing paper-film sleeves. According to Könnecke, Weber created the first machine that is able to manufacture these paper-film combined sleeves fully automatically. "Usually, they are hand made in China. Now, with this new machine, hand labor is not necessary anymore and one can have the same film-paper sleeve for almost the same price, if not cheaper," he says.
