29th of August – 2nd of September 2016

Ornamental-technical trade mission to Colombia and Ecuador

Colombia is the second largest flower producer in the world. The horticultural sector however, is facing some challenges in the field of productivity and efficiency. Challenges always lead to opportunities, which is why technical suppliers and Dutch growers consider the time to be right to get in contact with Colombian growers.

Ideavelop has compiled a sector study titled ‘Green Opportunities with an Orange Touch – Colombia’, describing the various challenges Colombian horticultural producers are dealing with, but also describes opportunities and future scenarios.
The study can be found here.

Draft program
The first 2 days, Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 of August, will be dedicated to field visits in both Ecuador and Medellin / Colombia. The participants will therefore be split in two separate groups. The group in Ecuador will focus on visits to rose farms, while the other group will dedicate their time to crops like chrysanthemum.

Participants will arrive in Quito or Medellin on Sunday, the 28th of August.

Tuesday afternoon / evening, both groups will fly to Bogota. From Wednesday 31 August onwards, joint visits will be paid to flower trial locations in the Bogota region combined with visits to flower producers (production and post-harvest).

Depending on the final group of participants to this trade mission, the Bogota group might be split in two separate groups once more. This will depend on the personal interests of each participant.

On Friday 2 September in the afternoon, a seminar on the possibilities to improve collaboration between the Dutch and the Colombian ornamental sector will be organized in close collaboration with the Dutch Embassy and Holland House. This seminar will be followed by a matchmaking event.

Colombian growers, (potential) distributors, suppliers, sales companies, government representatives and other relevant sector representatives will be invited for this event.
