US (FL): Orchid show draws growers, enthusiasts

Jim Roberts has been growing orchids for 25 years. It started when he was put in charge of his college's greenhouse in Minnesota. He later spent several years growing orchids in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

All these years later, Roberts now owns Florida SunCoast Orchids near Sarasota, where he grows, sells and hybridizes his orchids.

Roberts was one of four vendors at the Naples Orchid Society's 43rd annual Orchid Show at Naples Botanical Garden.

Thousands of vivid, fragrant orchids filled a room at the gardens. Hundreds of people filed in Sunday to buy, photograph and admire the different varieties of plants, including cattleyas, phalaenopses and oncidiums. Jim Rawson, the society's publicity chair, said about 2,000 people went to the orchid show on Saturday.
