India: Delhi flower market attracts young entrepreneurs

Uttarakhand has increased its flower cultivation up to nine times since its formation in 2000. The land under cultivation of flowers has gone up from 150 hectares 15 years ago to 1,400 hectares now and export of flowers to other states, including Delhi flower market, is increasing year after year. The department of horticulture which is encouraging farmers to take up flower cultivation says the Rs 200 crore (29.8 million USD) industry is set to grow by leaps and bounds.

"In 2014-15, horticulture department exported 1,700 MT loose flowers and 21 crore (210 million) spikes of gerbera, carnation and gladiolus along with some other flowers to other states. Delhi's flower market has nearly 8% import of flowers from Uttarakhand. We are planning to multiply this business by introducing various modern techniques of cultivating flowers to the farmers of state and reaching out to all the other big flower markets in India," said Ratan Kumar, deputy director, horticulture mission, Uttarakhand.

Mukhtiyar Chand from Bajpur in Udham Singh Nagar, who started his flower cultivation on a 1,000 square metre area, now grows flowers on over 6,000 square metres of land and makes an annual profit of Rs 25 lakh (37,000 USD). Chand sends his field-grown gerbera to Lucknow and Delhi flower markets which, he says, provide the best price for flowers.
