Dialogue on increasing density of logistics

NL: A Suppliers Day at Dutch Flower Group

On March 10th 2016 Dutch Flower Group (DFG) held their annual Suppliers Day with the theme "sophisticated logistics''.

The central question of the afternoon from the organizing nurseries, OZ Plants and Hamiplant, was: how better to arrange the supply chain as grower and trader together?

After an introduction about the course of the afternoon by Henk-Willem Spaargaren, director of OZ Plants and Leon Buskermolen, director of Hamiplant, the two groups of growers went along all the corporate processes. From the office to the basic information about the plant and all its specifications to the actual order by customers, from the intake of the products and the distribution to processing of the order and shipment. It became clear to us that the basic information provided by the growers on the IT systems of the nurseries is ‘key’ and should be kept up to date.

At the Dyck in Woubrugge the follow up of the afternoon took place. Marcel Zandvliet was responsible for the introduction and the questions to the two external speakers:
  • Toon de Young, commercial director at IT company Bexter, described the technological possibilities of 'track and trace' throughout the supply chain. As an example he presented the company Kloosterboer. The company, managed by this method, is able to follow fresh seafood on the level of details throughout the chain and communicating the information to its brokers and end customers. Important is that basic information here too is correctly put into the system. The RFID technology presented, has already been a topic of discussion in the project "From plant to customer", but surely is increasing the efficiency of denser logistics; an element to put into use in the near future.
  • Anouk Beeren manager e-commerce and merchandising at Bidvest Deli XL, then gave a presentation on the transition that Deli XL has gone through in a few years from a traditional wholesaler to an e-commerce company. At present, more than 90% of their fresh food is ordered over the web at Deli XL by various customers. Each customer has his own web environment, with the support of its suppliers based on good source information, correct pictures ('what you see is what you get') and storytelling.

Marco van Zijverden closed the afternoon, thanking everyone for their high turnout with an insight into the strategy of DFG. Mark indicated that, provided that the parties enhance their cooperation, there are many opportunities to increase the sales of plants.
