US (CA): Flower Fields expected to peak early

The Flower Fields in Carlsbad are coloring up fast this year thanks to El Niño rains coupled with warm sunny weather.

Paul Ecke III gave a kickoff tour at The Flower Fields on Wednesday, urging folks to come out and see the blooms at what used to be his family farm. But instead of poinsettias, which brought the Eckes and Carlsbad fame, the fields are now home to 80 million Giant Tecolote Ranunculus growing from March to early May.

About 800,000 bunches of ranunculus, each containing 10 stems, are expected to be shipped around the world this season.

The fields switched from poinsettias to ranunculus and strawberries after the poinsettias moved into greenhouses in the 1960s. “We wanted to continue the tradition of growing flowers outside,” Ecke said.
