US (MI): Holland officials pick site for new city greenhouse

The city is working on plans to build a new greenhouse behind the park and cemetery departments’ offices at 429 E. 24th St., near its parks and cemetery warehouse. Initial estimates indicate the project could cost about $431,000, which would be split between the city’s next two fiscal years.

This is the second-to-last spring Holland will be starting its seedlings inside the city’s greenhouse at the corner of 20th Street and Central Avenue.

“The (24th Street) location is good for us,” Parks and Recreation Director Andy Kenyon said. “There’s power and plumbing and water services so it’ll be easy to get to. All the dirt and soil (we use) is located here, so there’s less transportation back and forth, which helps. It will help with the cohesiveness of our staff.”

Due to private contributions of $500,000 from Heart of Holland donors, the city agreed to extend snowmelt along Central Avenue down to 20th Street — and to sell its greenhouse. The Commons of Evergreen will purchase the greenhouse from the Heart of Holland group for the building's appraised value of $40,000.
