US (MD): Local flowers getting more popular

Demand for local flowers has increased lately, according to the Maryland Department of Agriculture, and the most recent U.S. Department of Agriculture Census from 2012 notes that sales of local flowers in Maryland totaled about $1.15 million.

To capitalize on the demand, the MDA and the Maryland Cut Flower Growers Association launched www.marylandgrownflowers.com. The site features 26 growers, including several in Carroll, such as Clear Ridge Nursery in Union Bridge, Stoney Acres and Two Boots Farm in Hampstead, Tierra Blooms in Taneytown, and Patchwork Dahlias in Westminster.

Users can search directories of local farms organized by county and browse photos of the types of flowers available by season, making it easy to find local, fresh-cut flowers for a wedding or for landscaping.
