Ornamentals Grown Under Glass
- 8% increase in Farm Business Income to an average £44,049 per business
- Variable costs increase 9%
- Fixed Costs up by 10%
- Top performing businesses spend significantly less on a per output basis: The ten premium businesses recorded a FBI of £124,713 per ha, with an average productive area of 0.84ha. Total variable costs for these high performing businesses were lower on a per £100 of gross output by £3.70 than for the average, while fixed costs were also lower by £7.80, resulting in a FBI that was £9 higher than average.
Hardy Nursery Stock Businesses
- 16% increase in Farm Business Income
- Driven by savings in variable costs: Seeds and young plants down 18%, Fertiliser down 23%, Crop Protection down 12%
- Less than 5% of income from diversification (in contrast to other horticulture businesses in the survey)
- Most intensive businesses, those with a crop output of over £175,000 per hectare actually saw a 4% decrease in overall income, after seeing significant increases to fixed costs.
- It was the more extensive businesses in the survey that really gained from falling costs.
