Meems' Garden in Van

US (TX): Entrepreneur turns hobby into floral venture

Melinda Studinka never set out to become a commercial flower grower. She really just wanted to be closer to family, to get out of the city and live a more healthy lifestyle.

“I knew it was going to be a lot of work,” she said of turning her gardening hobby into a cut-flower business. “And I know I’m getting a lot more exercise than I would be if I just kept my own garden. It’s keeping me fit.”

She tends to her business, Meem’s Garden in Van, from sunup to sundown most days. Her husband, Emil, helps with the tractor work, and she’s recently brought in a couple of helpers part-time. But it’s largely a one-woman show - from the growing to the cutting, from the arranging to the selling of her flowers at the Rose City Farmers Market.
