US (MT): Ace Greenhouse focuses on local cultivation

Ace Hardware in Great Falls is a locally owned business and because of this, owner Jim Hellen works to sell locally produced products when possible. When it comes to bedding plants and flowers, Hellen especially wants to provide his customers with local starts.

“You have better luck when they’ve been started in our climate,” Hellen said.

For years, however, finding greenhouses that could keep up with the huge demand for plants at Great Falls Ace stores was a struggle.

“I wanted to support the little greenhouses in our area,” Hellen said, but one or two small greenhouses couldn’t meet the need for plants. “It was difficult, there are no big operations that wanted to supply at the ‘wholesale’ level.”

Hellen ended up buying from several small greenhouses and spent time knocking on doors trying to find more gardeners for Ace. One of the small greenhouses was Parker Gardens, owned by Pat and Becky Parker.
