"UK: "Sweet Syrie" rose celebrates Barnardo’s 150th anniversary"

A new rose called ‘Sweet Syrie’, created by specialist rose grower Harkness is being launched at the Chelsea Flower Show 2016 to help raise vital funds for children’s charity Barnardo’s.

The climbing rose honours the work of the funder of Dr Barnardo’s wife Syrie Barnardo, in the charity’s 150th anniversary year.

Dr Thomas Barnardo was originally from Dublin but founded the largest and oldest children’s charity in 1866 when he saw the poverty some children were living in the East End of London.

Syrie worked alongside Thomas Barnardo, helping London’s destitute children and continued to support the charity after her husband died.
