Phosphorus in the Great Lakes is an important issue, and growers are encouraged to reduce and/or eliminate all potential sources of phosphorus emissions from their operations. Nutrient reduction projects for greenhouses that are located in watersheds that drain into the central and western basins of Lake Erie will be a high priority and are likely to receive funding. Even if your farm is located outside of this region OMAFRA and FCO are strongly encouraging you to apply, as there is significant importance placed on greenhouse nutrient management. Some example projects could include:
- Planning/studies to determine best recirculation plan for your operation
- Installation of recirculation systems (avoids nutrient loss to the ground)
- New and/or redundant (backup) treatment systems (avoids nutrient loss due to system failure)
- Additional or redundant storage
- Nutrient management planning for land application
- Replacement of leaky troughs in instances where nutrients may reach stormwater mains
- Engineering studies to deter where unknown sources of phosphorus contamination may be coming from
