US: Alaska expected to ship record number of luxury flowers

Whether they’re miles apart or side-by-side, sisters Rachel Christy and Becca Bryan are connected by peonies.

Bryan lives in Texas, but for the past five summers she’s come to Alaska to help Christy harvest Alaska Blooms Peony Farm in Wasilla.

“Flower farmers in general are a dying breed, but we are trying to stop that or at least bring back the industry,” Christy said.

Stems from Alaska Blooms Peony Farm and other growers have started arriving at Alaska Peony Distributor’s processing facility at Lake Hood.

“Most of the Lower 48 production dried up about a week ago. Everyone’s turned to Alaska now. The phone is ringing off the wall and everyone is looking for Alaska peonies,” Mike Williams, managing partner of Alaska Peony Distributors, said.

The peony industry is growing in Alaska and is expecting to ship out more luxury flowers this year than ever before, according to Williams.
