India: Sky high prices of flowers dishearten buyers

Not to be left behind, flowers too have matched the sky high prices of all commodities in India. Flowers may not be an essential commodity but they become necessary on certain occasions. Unfortunately for flower lovers though, prices are currently very high in the local market. The prices of different varieties of flowers range between Rs. 600-1200 (9-18 USD) per kg. Even the humble Marigold flowers are sold for Rs. 500-600 (7.50-9 USD) per kg at a couple of shops in Aberdeen Bazar.

The owner of a shop told a correspondent that since there are hardly any flowers produced in the islands, all the required flowers are imported from the mainland, especially from Chennai on every alternate day. “We keep them in the fridge to retain their freshness for a couple of days. Apart from daily worshippers, the other customers buy these for different occasions such as marriages, birthday parties or some other social functions. Some buy them in loose form while others go for bouquets,” he said.
