Spain: 11% increase in flower and live plant imports

The Spanish import of live plants and flowers increased by 11% from January to May 2016 compared with the same period last year, reaching a value of 96.3 million euros, according to the latest data supplied by the Directorate General of Customs, processed by FEPEX.

Most imports within the sector correspond to live plants, with 58 million euros; a 51% increase. Within living plants, some noteworthy products are trees and shrubs, with 17.5 million euros (+5%), houseplants, with 12.4 million euros (+ 20%) and outside plants, with 11.1 million euros (+51%).

Until May this year, an increase was also recorded in the import of bulbs (by 3%), totalling 5.7 million euros.

By contrast, the import of cut flowers and foliage were reduced. Cut flower imports totalled 29.7 million euros, down 2%, due to the decline in the purchase of overseas roses, with 16.4 million (-8%), and carnations, with 2.2 million euros (-20%).

The import of foliage dropped by 5%, down to 2.9 million euros, according to the Department of Customs and Special Taxes of the Spanish Tax Agency; a body under the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.
