India: Cut flower industry hit by Tamil Nadu protests

The recent spate of protests between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka has not only disrupted traffic, but has also affected the cut-rose flower business. According to growers, the business has drastically fallen 50% within the three days of protests on both sides of the state borders.

From Hosur, a town bordering Tamil Nadu and Karnataka famous for its cut-rose flower business, various rose varieties are cultivated and exported to Europe, Japan, South-East Asia, Australia, Middle East and Russia.

The export business is heavily dependent on cargo flight services provided by Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru which is about an hour from Hosur. "Due to the protests, carriers were charging exorbitant rates to transport the consignment," Ahmed said .

Exporters usually pay 3,000 per trip to the Bengaluru airport from Hosur. "Now we are charging up to 8,000 to carry cut roses," said P Suresh, a van operator. He further said that transporting anything across the border is a huge risk.
