Dubai flower seller imports from India for Onam

In a bid to give king Mahabali a gracious welcome, a grand floral carpet, the pookkalam, is laid out in intricate designs, starting from the first day of Onam. With the ground serving as a blank canvas, only flowers indigenous to Kerala were traditionally used to create patterns.

In modern times, however, non-native blooms are purchased from flower shops to add to the floral grandeur of pookalam. And in Dubai, flower shops near the temple area in Bur Dubai is the place to get these flowers.

Flower seller V Perumal hails from Tamil Nadu and claims to be the first Indian to introduce flowers in the UAE, some 25 years back. "Actually the flower business started picking up in the last 15 years here. The demand for flowers during Onam is quite high. This year, for Onam, I have imported around 25 tonnes of flowers from India, with 18 varieties from five major cities - Madurai, Mumbai, Coimbatore, Kolkata, and Bangalore," said Perumal.
