Chrysanthemum growers Thomas and Shane Wheeler recently moved

US (MD): Growing operation starts in Middletown field

Mums in orange, rust, yellow, purple, white and red have been growing most of the summer in a field at TSB Enterprises on Marker Road in Middletown, Maryland- just northwest of Frederick.

Starting as tight, green mounds, the property’s 40,000 chrysanthemums have slowly exploded into color as the days have grown shorter and the nights longer.

TSB, which recently moved to Marker Road from Lothian, near Annapolis, began leasing the old farm once known as Gude Brothers Greenhouses in July.

Brothers Thomas and Shane Wheeler, who grew up in Mount Airy, started the business more than a decade ago. Shane lives in Myersville, and the two decided to move their wholesale growing operation to the Marker Road property, where their flowering plants grow on a 2-acre field in the shadow of South Mountain.

Along with mums, which will be shipped to independent garden centers throughout the Mid-Atlantic area, are 250,000 pots of pansies and violas, late fall growing flowers that will mostly decorate shopping center and other commercial properties as warmer weather gives way to colder weather.
