Indian wholesalers do good business during Diwali

The flower trade that boomed during the festive time suddenly came to near-standstill on Monday, day after Diwali.

"Flowers worth around Rs 100 crore [15 million USD] were sold during Diwali from Patna alone. The flowers procured by Patna wholesalers are sold to retailers in most parts of Bihar, except eastern districts where flowers are procured by local wholesalers from neighbouring West Bengal," said Vinod Kumar Malakar, a wholesaler who also runs a retail counter of flowers at Mahavir Sthan near Patna Junction.

There was indeed only a small group of Kayastha devotees of Lord Chitragupt who had come to purchase 'gota mala' to decorate their community god and portraits of ancestors of their families for the puja on Tuesday. Chhath devotees had apparently not as yet begun the preparations that need flowers. The rising sun and setting sun will be worshipped during Chhath on Sunday and Monday.
