November and December, busy time for a garden center?

The leaves are off the trees and the flower beds around your home are dying, but at Vern Goers Greenhouse in Hinsdale, this is one of the busiest times of the year.

Not surprisingly, May and June are the busiest months at the garden center, said Phillip Goers, whose family business celebrated its 50th anniversary this year.

After the spring planting season, the greenhouse is the busiest the last week in November and first week of December, as people buy plants and greens to decorate their home for Thanksgiving and the holiday season.

Outdoor tables at the nursery are covered with balsam, boxwood or noble fir wreaths from just over a foot to 5-feet in diameter.

Other tables are piled with garlands and roping of evergreens, such as Douglas fir, cedar or a combination of noble fir, white pine, incense cedar and juniper, added for visual interest.

The greens are grown on the West Coast or up North and ordered from wholesalers.

For flowering plants, there are cyclamen, Christmas cactus and, of course, poinsettia. Seven of Goers' eight greenhouses are filled with them. Goers grows 5,000 poinsettias from cuttings, starting in July.

We grow what the market bears," said Goers, who has about seven full-time employees.
