US (MT): Gainan's growing poinsettia in greenhouse again for holidays

For the first time in about eight years, Gainan’s Flower and Garden Center is growing its own poinsettias for the holiday season. It’s more expensive and more labor intensive, but to Gainan, the risk is worth it.

“We finally decided to take the plunge again… This is what poinsettias should look like. They shouldn’t be in a plastic sleeve,” Gainan, the company’s second-generation owner, said last week.

Gainan estimates investing about $30,000 to restart the poinsettia operation. The cost of regular maintenance and growing plants is about 20 percent higher than hauling them in from out of state, he said.
