US (KS): Rose rosette disease confirmed in Ellis County
Rose rosette disease is a virus-like illness affecting only rose bushes. Symptoms include unusually elongated stems, distorted and discolored leaves and excessive thorn production, said Holly Dickman, a horticulture agent with Ellis County Extension.
The plant disease had not been identified in Ellis County until October, when it was reported by a local Master Gardener and confirmed through Kansas State University’s plant pathology department.
“Chances are it’s been around; we just haven’t had anyone inquire about it or ask about it,” said Dickman, noting it’s of particular concern since rose bushes and shrubs are so common in this area.
A type of rose shrub known as the Knock Out family of roses is locally prevalent and is known to be affected by rosette, she said.
