US (OH): Jeffers Greenhouse rebounds from fire

The Jeffers family had a rude awakening in the early morning hours of April 5. Their business was literally going up in smoke.

The barn and some of the greenhouses of the family business — Jeffers Greenhouse — on the Lucas County side of the village was on fire due to an electrical fire which started in the barn. It was not visible from the family home on the property and had been reported to 911 by a motorist traveling along U.S. 24.

The Jeffers family has been active in sales for decades as the family was one of the first vendors at the Toledo Farmers Market when it was formed.

The actual greenhouse operation began with Max and Betty Jeffers in 1990. Their son, Jeff, and his wife Trish, along with their daughters, Jenna and Hanna, began running the facility in 2014.

Betty remembers that morning as she was awakened by authorities telling her she had to get out of the house. The barn and the greenhouses were on fire and the three propane tanks —the largest of which was 1,000 gallons, could explode and posed a significant danger for safety.
