Kenya: American buyers to grace IFTEX
The launch of direct flights from Nairobi to the United States has brought good news for the flower sector as 10 American flower buyers from Miami are expected at the 7th Edition of the International Flower Trade Exhibition (IFTEX) slated for June.
The Kenya Flower Council says flower farmers are facing stiff competition from Least Developed Countries after Kenya was upgraded to a middle income economy.
“We appreciate competition especially from Ethiopia, and emerging countries like Rwanda,” said Clement Tulezi CEO Kenya Flower Council.
They are urging the government to step in after the country was elevated to a middle income economy that has seen Kenya denied the opportunity to subsidize the sector.
“We want consistency, we are calling on the government to assist us in finding the place of flowers in this country,” urged Tulezi adding that, “We have an increase in smallholders and we want the government to improve infrastructure, farm inputs, and availability of machinery.”
