"Europe: "No shortage of creativity among orchid growers"

Exclusive orchids are doing really well this season. This is encouraging for growers now that Phalaenopsis isn't doing as well price-wise. "The demand for orchids is generally the same as last year, and that is positive. In the past the exclusive orchids generally followed suit when the Phalaenopsis performed poorly. Fortunately that doesn't seem to be the case now," says Marcel Spaans, founder and co-owner of Logico, who has been in the orchid business for years.

The Dendrobium Sa-Nook

According to Marcel, this is partly due to a rising demand for exclusive types of orchids. "The garden centers and florists are looking for products that they can distinguish themselves with. They then knock on our door to see which types we offer. The so-called wild orchids do well with the consumer. The Dendrobium species Nobile, Berry Oda and Sa-Nook have a lot of interest. In addition, there is also a great deal of demand for the Cymbidiums and Paphiopedilums that don't flower until October."

Increasingly creative growers
If things aren't going so well in the market, there is often no shortage of innovation. "In the past two or three years you see that Phalaenopsis growers have started experimenting with different forms. From spirals to heart-shaped, hanging or in a circle. In addition, various species of exclusive orchids are grown with more branches. A good percentage of the Dendrobium Sa-nook is now produced with two branches, just like the Dendrobium Nobile. There are also several variants of the Nobile with three branches. We're seeing all over that growers become more creative and do their best to offer better quality products."

As an association of orchid growers, Logico has a good view of the market. The organization arranges the sales, marketing and logistics for the growers, along with the packaging, casks and labels. “In addition, we also develop concepts and customer solutions," says Brad van Bremen, who handles the marketing and communication at the company." About 35 people work here and for each product we have a specialist who is the contact point for customers, growers and exporters. That way we are an A to Z orchid supplier for A to Z customers."

"The products of our growers are exported throughout Europe,” says Brad. “We also noticed an increasing demand from Eastern Europe, especially Russia. We will therefore focus more on this market in the future."
