City council denied an application in July from federally licensed grower The Green Organic Dutchman to build a 130,000-square-foot greenhouse for medical marijuana on Jerseyville Road. City planners had recommended the project despite a bylaw size limit of 24,000 square feet for rural pot production.
The company announced it would appeal the decision to a provincial tribunal and started construction on the greenhouse anyway, only to be slapped with a stop-work order by the city.
Now, the company has successfully applied to the city building department for permission to construct the same large greenhouse for “potted mums” instead of medical marijuana – for now, anyway.
Government affairs director Ian Wilms said the grower now has the necessary permits to complete a 130,000-square-foot facility on Jerseyville Road. “This will be converted to grow cannabis upon a successful appeal,” he said.
