Getting married in Sicily almost always involves Avalanche+ roses. Insiders explain why this Dutch top rose is so in demand in this part of the country.
Avalanche+ is a favourite for Italian weddings in general and in Sicily it is so sought-after it's downright remarkable. "The rose is the most important flower for weddings and in size, colour and shape Avalanche+ is a perfect match for the romantic style that is favoured for weddings here," says Charles Lansdorp, ambassador for Avalanche+ in Italy. "In southern Italy many couples are still getting married in churches and timeless classics are very much in demand for that. White Avalanche+ is the most popular rose, Sweet+ and Pearl+ are also doing well, thanks to florists who are not afraid to raise the bar to inspire their clients."
Making a difference
One of the Sicilian florists who uses a lot of Avalanche+ roses for his wedding assignments is Fabio Sicurella from L'Angolo dei Fiori in Ribera. "I always try to incorporate elements of Sicily in my arrangements, because the island is in my heart," he says. "I live here, I love it, I treasure the traditions as much as anyone else. White weddings are highly popular here, but it is really effective to show clients that a hint of colour can be classic and joyful too. I use a lot of white Avalanche+, but also a lot of Sweet+ and have done a wedding with Peach+ and Candy+ that looked amazing. It's a way to distinguish yourself as a florist, whatever the budget is. It truly is one of my favourite flowers to work with and definitely my favourite rose."
This opinion is shared by wedding and event planner Mauro Adami of DomoAdami, who loves both the roses and Sicily. "It's one of the main Italian wedding locations," he says. "It offers astonishing scenery, romantic bays and fairy-tale palaces for your 'I do's'. It's the kind of place that can make a wedding day truly unforgettable. For matching florals, Avalanche+ is the most obvious choice, it's a great match with all things Sicilian. It's a phenomenon out here. Very romantic, very classic, much sought after by my clients.
Perfect for making a good impression
Not just quality and personality make Avalanche+ a favourite in Italy, these Dutch top roses are also a great fit with the general Italian wish to cut a good figure. "For a Sicilian wedding it is not unusual to invite up to 200 guests for the whole day," Lansdorp says. "Lunch and dinner are important, everything is being done to make it a truly special day, to celebrate the couple. The bride is princess-for-a-day, the wedding décor should show up well. With those kinds of demands, Avalanche+ is your first choice."
