On Wednesday, October 3rd, 2018, the official North American launch of the new book Plant Empowerment will be held. The launch will take place at the Canadian Greenhouse Conference at the Scotiabank Convention Centre in Niagara Falls, Canada. Jan Voogt, one of the authors, will deliver a keynote speech about the book’s main topic: Plant Empowerment.
Plant Empowerment is a new approach for growing crops in greenhouses, based on a combination of physical and physiological principles, aiming to optimize growth by keeping the plant “in balance”.
The starting point for Plant Empowerment is the natural behavior of plants in relation to the greenhouse environment, and is described by the important balances energy, water, CO2 and assimilates. These balances are monitored with the use of sensors in combination with crop measurements, and are combined in a coherent framework that draws from physical and plant physiological knowledge and insights. This results in data that can be used to control and improve cultivation processes. This approach has been named “Data Driven Growing”.
