Cut hydrangea for tropical growing

The hydrangea grows best in the mild climate of the European continent. During the IFTF, however, Kolster presented a series of cut hydrangeas specially bred to grow in tropical temperatures. This generated a lot of visitors from South America, but also from Kenya and Asia.

The Magical Temptation is one of the hydrangea varieties suitable for tropical temperatures.

12 selections
The breeding process started in 2011, says director Peter Kolster. "We crossed several local varieties from tropical countries with the strong European hydrangeas. We achieved the first good results in 2014." In the following years several varieties were developed.

"We now have 12 selections in red, red-green, pink, pink-green, and blue-green. A white variety is coming." All varieties have - as we are accustomed to from the Boskoop breeder - the word Magical in the name.

In 2018, the plants were planted for the first time at various growers. One of them is Eternal Flower. During the IFTF, Kolster shared the stand with this grower from Ecuador, and that went well. "We are not only colleagues, but also good friends."

New hypericum
Eternal Flower also grows the hypericum from Kolster. During the fair also a new series of the hypericum was presented. "The new varieties have thicker berries. We supply them in various colors: white, three shades of pink and a deep wine red color. There will also be a red in a larger size."
